For over 250 years, Royal Copenhagen has been synonymous with timeless porcelain, elegant table settings, and a deep-rooted Danish design tradition. Its iconic blue patterns and impeccable craftsmanship have graced dining tables and display cabinets across generations. Now, as it celebrates a landmark anniversary, the storied brand is charting a bold new course: diving into the world of interior objects. Leading the way is Kontur, a sculptural collection that marks the brand’s first foray beyond the tabletop and into the heart of the home.
Inspired by the ebb and flow of ocean waves, Kontur translates the movement of water into solid form. The collection also nods to the trio of waves in Royal Copenhagen’s logo – a tribute to Denmark’s major waterways: the Sound, the Great Belt, and the Little Belt. The series includes a vase, a dish, a bonbonniere, and a limited-edition lamp, all defined by soft, undulating lines and that unmistakable blue. Each piece is made in Denmark using a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern applications. “Centuries-old techniques and modern technology were used to create this collection, including Royal Copenhagen’s signature underglaze spray-painting technique, used to adorn the porcelain and create the rich depth in the design,” shares Creative Director Jasper Toron Nielsen.
The hand-sprayed technique gives each piece a layered blue hue that echoes the gradation of shallow to deep water. It also ensures that no two objects are exactly alike. And with a limited run of only 250 pieces, every item in the Kontur collection is a rare and collectible work of art.
With Kontur, Royal Copenhagen isn’t just branching out into another category; it’s building on a legacy. “With Royal Copenhagen’s deep-rooted connection to the ocean and our iconic blue hues, Kontur emerges as a natural extension of this heritage, adding depth and a playful twist to our universe,” says Nielsen. As the brand steps beyond the table and into the living space, Kontur signals an exciting but thoughtful evolution – one that stays true to its roots while inviting a new wave of expression.
